Drummer Boy Pathway Marking

Wednesday, 22 February 2012 15:50

You may have noticed some white painted lines on the ground at the Park. These lines represent the work in progress of the group that was designated by the Board of Selectmen to help lay out and construct accessible pathways. The All Citizens’ Access Committee had asked to the Board of Selectmen earlier this year to continue the Town’s efforts to make Town-wide improvements that would enhance access for all of our citizens, including those of us who are permanently or temporarily confined to wheel chairs or experiencing ambulatory difficulties. The painted lines depict a potential course for a proposed accessible perimeter pathway of crushed, packed stone dust. The lines are necessary in order to obtain construction cost estimates. Once completed, it is anticipated that the proposed 6-foot wide pathway would encourage those of us with ambulatory difficulties to come out and enjoy the park.

Frequently Asked Questions About “Pay-As-You-Throw”

Wednesday, 16 January 2013 08:58

Why is Brewster concerned about its trash?

  • Brewster ships about 2,700 tons of waste by truck annually to Covanta/SEMASS for combustion. Right now, the Town pays about $34/ton (the “tipping fee”) or about $91,800 annually.
  • In 2015, Brewster’s tipping fee will increase to $70/ton – more than double the current rate. If Brewster ships the same amount of trash to SEMASS, it would cost around $189,000 a year.

How can Brewster approach its trash problem?

  1. Increase the Town’s Transfer Station subsidy (and cut spending somewhere else);
  2. Raise the price on annual Residential Transfer Station permit fee to cover the increased costs; or
  3. Use a different strategy for solid waste management to control costs.
