PUBLIC MEETING ON THE REHABILITATION OF LONG POND
You are invited to attend a public meeting regarding the planned treatment of Long Pond for the purpose of reducing phosphorus concentrations and associated algal blooms and oxygen shortages. The consultant to the Towns of Brewster and Harwich for this project will present the basic findings of past studies and describe the options for improving the pond. The details of the chosen solution will then be covered, with plenty of time for questions and comments about the proposed treatment, which involves the application of aluminum based compounds that make phosphorus unavailable to algae. This meeting is intended to give all interested parties enough background to understand how the proposed treatment came to be recommended, what it will do for the pond, what risks and costs are involved, and the proposed sequence and timeline for upcoming activities. It is also a very appropriate time for those with concerns or questions to make them known and initiate discussion of how to best improve and protect the pond for the future.
The meeting will occur on Thursday, January 18, 2007 at 7:00 PM in the Don B. Griffin Room at the Harwich Town Hall in Harwich, Massachusetts. Please to make every effort to attend, as this will be the best opportunity to get complete information, seek direct answers to questions, and have your input considered prior to final plan preparation and a more formal hearing process under the Wetlands Protection Act.
