The Brewster Board of Selectmen voted on June 17 to rename the Transfer Station to the "Brewster Recycling Center." The new name reflects the town’s increased efforts to recycle more and cut the volume of trash the Town produces. A key strategy, Pay-As-You-Throw, will begin October 1 and is expected to provide environmental and fiscal benefits.
Hours of Operation:
The Recycling Center is open Thursday - Monday between the hours of 8am and 3pm. The station is closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Holidays. Should a holiday fall on a Monday, the transfer station will be open on the following Tuesday.
Resident Transfer Station stickers can be obtained at the Brewster Chamber of Commerce Office, at the rear downstairs entrance to the Brewster Town Offices, 2198 Main Street from June through Labor Day Weekend. At all other times of year, current stickers and replacement stickers are available in the Selectmen’s office. Beginning July 1, 2013 a Transfer Station Sticker will be required on all vehicles entering the Transfer and Recycling Station. You may also purchase your sticker by mail, click here for an application.

Brewster will begin a new solid-waste management program on October 1, 2013 called Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT). A Frequently Asked Questions sheet is available for download in PDF format.
On that date, all Brewster Transfer Station users will dispose of trash in special Brewster PAYT bags. Refuse must be placed in those bags prior to disposal. Recyclables don’t need to be bagged and recycling.paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and metal containers will continue to be handled as they have been. PAYT bags for refuse will available in 3 sizes:
Hazardous materials are collected at the Harwich Transfer Station off Queen Anne Road in Harwich. Collection Days are held from 9am - noon on the second Satruday during the months of May, June, July, August, September and October. These collections provide a good opportunity to clean out cellars, garages, and sheds of household hazardous materials such as pesticides, lawn chemicals, cleaners, etc. Please watch the newspapers for notification as well as flyers and postings at the Transfer Station. The 2013 Poster is available in PDF format.
The Transfer Station also maintains an old/unused paint collection program. Old or unused paints may be brought to the station where others may find them useful. All remaining paint is then shipped to a reuse facility or are used as a fuel source. Oil-based and water-based paints are accepted, but cannot be mixed. Please see one of the attendants for access to the Paint Recycling Shed. Please note that the Paint Recycling Shed will be closing at the end of November and will reopen in April. This is also a good way to eliminate potentially hazardous/problematic materials from your home.
Clothing can be donated to various organizations. Clothing donation bins are located near the Scouts 5 cent returnable shed located near the gatehouse. Local scouting groups separate returnable bottles and cans on a weekly schedule and coordinate returns through a local recycling facility. The funds generated go to a good cause and are appreciated by the scouts - both male and female groups.
A printable 2013 Brewster Recycling Guide is available for download and includes information about where and what can be recycled at the Brewster Transfer Station.
The Recycling Commission page has a guide to resources for recycling as well as composting and reuse of material.
